Dell X200 (presumably also Gateway 200):
* Install of SuSE 8.2 from DVD will fail mid-stream: somehow,
the IEEE 1394 DVD drive (in the media base) disconnects after
a couple of hundred MB. Workaround: FTP install or copy onto hard drive.
* Graphical boot screen (ALT-F1) will not activate automatically,
but does work if manually moving around the appropriate bootup
scripts in /etc/rc.d.
* If left on for considerable amounts of time, KDE 3.1 screen saver
and sometimes sound will no longer work. No soluation sought so far,
and no solution found.
* Modem is a WinModem. Use the Linux PCTel drivers, and modify
/etc/modules.conf.local to contain:
alias char-major-62 ptserial
below ptserial pctel
options ptserial country_code=1
install pctel /sbin/insmod -f pctel
The force is needed because of different GCC versions. The modem
will not work reliably after the first usage, i.e., after insertion
of the module, the modem will typically work, but after the first
hang-up, it mostly just stops working.
Also, sound stops working when using the modem, so I do not load the
modules except when I need them.
